Each week kids will learn about a few books of the Bible along with some simple hand motions to help them recall the books quickly. The goal is that by the end of the 12 weeks, kids will not only be able to say all 66 books of the Bible from memory but they will also have a general idea of the bigger story God is trying to teach us through His Word.

How Many Books in The Good Book?
Scripture: Psalm 119:11, Matthew 4:1-10
Synopsis: Jesus is always the example we look towards for how to live life. One of the first stories recorded about Jesus shows us that Jesus took time to learn and memorize Scripture. Because of that, Jesus was able to use the verses he had memorized to fight off temptation! One of the ways we can be like Jesus and begin to store God’s Word in our heart, is by knowing what God has included in the Bible and where we can find it.
Objective: Kids will learn how many books are in the Bible (66), how many are in the Old Testament (39) and how many are in the New Testament (27).
The Law Books
Scripture: Genesis 1:1-5, Genesis 3:1-6, Exodus 20:1-17 Creation, the Fall, The 10 Commandments
Synopsis: The first five books of the Bible tell us how God created the world from nothing. We also see that everything God made was good and perfect. But it didn’t take long for sin to enter the world. Sin is anytime we disobey God. Sin made the perfect world God had made not perfect anymore. In the book of Exodus God gave his people the 10 Commandments to show them all the things they would have to do to try to be perfect. God knew that no one would be able to keep all of those rules perfectly though, so he was already working on a bigger plan to get rid of sin forever.
Objective: Kids will memorize the first 5 books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy
The History Books
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:4-11 and 32-49, 1 Samuel 28:17-18, David & Goliath, Saul’s Reign Comes To An End
Synopsis: The books of history tell us what happened to God’s people when they inherited the Promised Land and what happened when they forgot about God. These books are filled with many exciting stories that all have the same basic message: obey God and you can overcome any obstacle just like David or disobey God and you will surely fail like Saul.
Objective: Kids will memorize the next 12 books: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther
Poetry & Wisdom Books
Scripture: Psalm 119:11, I Have Hidden Your Word In My Heart
Synopsis: These 5 books are packed full of practical advice for how to live God’s way, as well as beautiful verses describing how amazing, awesome, powerful, loving and good God is. When you are looking for a book to read when you wake up each day or before you go to bed at night, Psalms and Proverbs are great options.
Objective: Kids will memorize the next 5 books: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon
Major Prophets
Scripture: Daniel 6:3-23, Daniel In the Lion’s Den
Synopsis: The Major Prophets were men who delivered God’s messages to his people. Their books and their lives remind us that no matter what the situation we should always keep our eyes and our lives focused on God. They also remind us that even when things seem dark around us, God is always in control, we just have to be patient and wait for his perfect timing.
Objective: Kids will memorize the next 5 books: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel
Minor Prophets
Scripture: Jonah 1 and Jonah 3
Synopsis: Jonah is probably the most famous of the Minor Prophets. Being swallowed by a fish is a pretty memorable story. But Jonah’s story isn’t just a big fish story. Like all of the Minor Prophets, Jonah’s story points us towards our need for repentance and God’s forgiveness. In the story of Jonah, we see examples of repentance by both Jonah and the people of Nineveh. We see an example of Jesus’ sacrificial death when Jonah is swallowed by the fish for three days to save the crew from the storm. And we also see that God’s forgiveness is freely given to those who don’t deserve it.
Objective: Kids will memorize the next 12 books and be able to say all the books in the Old Testament: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.
The Gospels
Scripture: John 10:7-18, The Good Shepherd
Synopsis: If the Bible was a movie, the Gospels would be that pivotal scene where everything changes. You know the scene, it’s in almost every movie. Things are going well for the hero, but then suddenly, everything falls apart. It looks like everything is hopeless and the villain has won. But then the unexpected happens. The hero returns, stronger than before and good triumphs in the end! That is exactly what we see in the Gospels. Jesus’ life changed the course of history and gave every single person a chance to escape the punishment that our sins deserve.
Objective: Kids will memorize the next 4 books: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
Church History
Scripture: Acts 2:42-47, The Early Church
Synopsis: The book of Acts describes the “acts” of the early church. Basically, what Jesus’ followers did after his resurrection. In this book we see not only how the idea of gathering for church service and Bible study began, but also how the body of believers loved and supported each other. Jesus himself said that “everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” This book reminds us that “acts” of love and unselfishness are how we can share Christ’s love with the world.
Objective: Kids will memorize the next book: Acts
Letters To Churches
Scripture: Galatians 5:22-25, The Fruit of The Spirit
Synopsis: The next 9 books we will memorize are all letters Paul wrote to different churches. Each letter contains specific instructions Paul wrote that were important for that church to hear. In his letter to the Galatian church, Paul describes what we know as the Fruit of the Spirit. These nine “fruits” give us a great guideline to check our lives to see if we are living like Christ.
Objective: Kids will memorize the next 9 books: Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, and 2 Thessalonians
Letters to Friends
Scripture: Hebrews 11:1-9, 11:32-34, and 12:1-3
Synopsis: The next 12 books of the New Testament are also letters. Some are written by Paul to specific friends in the church and some are written by other leaders in the early church. The book of Hebrews is written to the Jews who had become believers in Jesus. Even though we don’t know for sure who wrote this letter, we find some very powerful and encouraging words for all believers in Hebrews chapter 11 and 12. These passages remind us that all through history, people have believed in God even when life was hard because of the great promise of eternal life.
Objective: Kids will memorize the next 12 books: 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, and Jude
The Last Book
Scripture: Revelation 22:1-13, Jesus Is Coming Soon
Synopsis: The Bible ends with a final book that gives us a glimpse of what will happen in the future. As we saw with the Old Testament prophets, everything God promises will come true. The book of Revelation talks about how difficult things will be on earth before Jesus returns again, but ultimately reminds us that Jesus wins in the end. Because of that, if we have put our hope in Jesus we can live without fear and instead have joy even when life is hard.
Objective: Kids will be given a chance to accept Jesus as their Savior as well as memorize the last book: Revelation
All The Books In The Good Book
Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:14-17
Synopsis: This final passage reminds us that ALL Scripture is from God and is useful to help us as we live our lives. Now that you’ve memorized all 66 books, don’t let this be the end of your study of the Bible. Instead look at your knowledge of the Bible books as a roadmap to guide you for the rest of your life whenever you study the Bible. When you or a friend has a question about Jesus you can turn to the Gospels. When you want to know how to live wisely, spend some time in Proverbs. When you have questions about what Heaven is like you can turn to Revelation. God’s perfect Words have an answer for every question and challenge you will face in life.
